New Church Ministry’s Coaching Program Part II:  A Movement Initiator’s Perspective

A little more than three years ago, I was invited to participate in New Church Ministry’s coaching program as part of our Movement’s covenant with the Pacific Southwest Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. I accepted this invitation and opportunity. However, I did so with a healthy amount of skepticism, hesitancy, and even a little trepidation as to the time requirement involved, and what value it would provide. Rev. Steven Smith was assigned as my coach, and he has supported and journeyed with me for more than 3 years. Here's what I've learned:

Coaches help us live into the mission and vision

The skillset of a movement initiator, formerly known as a church planter, will rely heavily on experience, training, and knowledge. However, one of the most life-giving and necessary skillsets is one’s ability to grow, pivot, and adapt amid unforeseen changes, challenges, and new ways of doing things.

A coach is there to remind you that your peace, health, and wellbeing are not separate from the mission and vision

Rather, they are a part of what God is up to and doing in and through your new movement, and vital to its success.

Thank you for gathering with us in Louisville, KY
Can you believe that the 2023 General Assembly is over? Now that the dust has (mostly) settled, we’d like to express our gratitude to the Disciples that made this experience memorable, including exhibit booth visitors who stopped by to pick up swag and learn more about our programs; workshop attendees who explored DisciplesNEXT, a new paradigm for creating new faith communities, alongside Rev. Dr. Jose Martinez, Minister of New Church Strategies (pictured in image); partners who we haven’t seen in-person for four years; and of course, our hard-working colleagues who did a fantastic job of putting everything together. We’d also like to express our excitement with the launch of DisciplesNEXT, which heralds a new era in Disciples faith formation, one focused on contemplative action, prophetic advocacy, and faith-rooted organizing. Are you excited too? Visit our DiscipleNEXT page to learn more.

Gain a fresh perspective on how to counter Christian nationalism

What is the story of the United States? To Jaziah Masters, a guest on our IMPACT episode,
Political Heresy: Addressing and Countering Christian Nationalism, it’s one of constantly working to achieve the values of liberty and justice for all.

“Christian nationalism flies in the face of that by demanding a privilege placed for a select few,” he says. “I am passionate about combating Christian nationalism because I want the U.S. to live up to the high ideals established in our founding documents.”

As the Advocacy and Outreach Manager for the Baptist Joint Committee (BJC), Jaziah coordinates a variety of educational efforts that engage and empower BJC's supporters, expanding the base for religious liberty.

“BJC is a voice to listen to in this fight because of our commitment to faith freedom for all. And when we say for all, we mean it,” he explains. “Regardless of the faith you have (if you have a religious tradition at all), we all have the right and responsibility to engage and contribute constructively to the public square.”

Jaziah will be accompanied by his colleague Georgia McKee, BJC’s Digital Communications Associate, and host Rev. Dr. Jose Martinez on August 23 at 3:00 PM EST. Join them to hear an alternative faith witness and learn how you can combat this dangerous ideology. (If you can’t make it, don’t worry! All registrants will receive a recording of the webinar.) Register.
